The Texas Transplant Institute's multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care includes highly skilled physicians, advanced practice nurses, transplant coordinators, dietitians, social workers, pharmacists, and other caregivers dedicated to the care of transplant candidates, recipients, and donors. The patient and their referring physician is an integral part of the transplant team as well.

 


Charles Frederick


Charles Frederick LeMaistre, M.D.
Medical Director, Texas Transplant Institute

Dr. LeMaistre received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin, and a medical degree from Southwestern Medical School. He served his internship and residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital and VA Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and a bone marrow transplant fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Dr. LeMaistre is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. He has published over 200 manuscripts and abstracts. He is on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy currently serving as President, and is the Treasurer of the American Society for Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the International Society for Cell Therapy as well as other professional organizations.

Carlos R. Bachier, M.D. Carlos R. Bachier, M.D.
Director, Department of Research, Texas Transplant Institute

Dr. Bachier received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Tulane University and a medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He served his residency at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Puerto Rico, and completed a hematology, medical oncology, and bone marrow transplant fellowship at San Juan City Hospital and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Bachier was assistant professor of medicine at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center from 1994 to 1996. He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, as well as other professional organizations.

Paul J. Shaughnessy, M.D. Paul J. Shaughnessy, M.D.
Medical Director, Adult Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Program, Texas Transplant Institute

Dr. Shaughnessy received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Psychology from Indiana University, and a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He served his internship and residency in internal medicine at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He then completed a fellowship in hematology-medical oncology also at Wilford Hall Medical Center. Dr. Shaughnessy is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology. He served as an assistant professor of medicine with the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences from 1997 to 2001, and is a current assistant professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, as well as other professional organizations.
