ABOUT US

Texas Transplant Institute was formed in 1999. Formerly the South Texas Cancer Institute, the new organization effectively integrated two programs—solid organ transplant and blood and marrow stem cell transplant—that had operated separately within Methodist Healthcare in San Antonio, Texas.

The blood and marrow stem cell transplant program was established at Methodist Hospital in 1993. In 1998 the pediatric blood and marrow stem cell program was moved to Methodist Children’s Hospital*. The solid organ program was established in 1984 when the first kidney transplant was performed at the now known Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital*. In 1986, the first heart transplant was performed, and the first ventricular assist device as a bridge to heart transplant was implanted in 1988. The heart transplant program now resides at Methodist Heart Hospital*. In 1995 the pancreas program was established when the first simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplant was performed. The liver program was established in 2001.
